This game is amazing. You should buy it.There are certain games that are just special. This is one of them. I put it up there with Nex Machina as an impeccable arcade experience that will have you throwing your control in frustration and then rushing to the store to buy another. It's will feel wierd at first, but once you "get it", the experience is invigorating. The speed, the precision, the challenge. You've probably noticed the amazing aesthetic + music, which provides a lovely backdrop for your hours of playing the same level over and over trying to shave off seconds or complete one of the games devious challenges. Good stuff, but the real meat here is the gameplay.Despite the depth of it's mechanics, the game does a wonderful job of tutorializing and slowly feeding them to you.So, there are the mainline levels. They have checkpoints, you have health. You will be swinging and dashing your way through them, and you can take your time. The difficulty curve is pretty smooth as well, so as soon as your thumbs are getting sore a new toy will be introduced that you will want to play with. Each zone has a few of these levels, and once you've gone through them, you unlock the "boss" level which usually has some unique challenges and set-pieces. Eventually, you will also get a few bonus levels: there are "puzzle" style levels that I really love (but they might drive you insane), and then later some "speed" levels are introduced which require you to hit a series of checkpoints in a very tight time window. There are 4 zones per planet, and I'm on the third and last planet. The game says I am 62% finished. So, that's great, right? Well, you can also replay every single one of these levels to collect hidden "shards" and tackle challenges with "shard" rewards (and there are some special ones that are real head-scratchers). You can also go for score or time and see how you stack up on the leaderboards. There is full ghost support so you can have real-time feedback on your run, and you can watch any of the runs on the leaderboard to learn from the best.If any of this sounds interesting, try it out. I highly recommend a controller and the twin-stick control scheme for the independent aim it provides. You can also play with m+kb, just keyboard, or use a more standard platformer scheme as well. The controls are all fully rebindable as well.Oh, there is story too. There are some interesting characters (you're just a mute Rifter) and I actually loled at some of the writing. The lore and some of the big story beats are hidden behind "story shards" that you need to collect so you can get access to some of the more esoteric bits. That means, if you want the full story, you're going to have to git gud. Personally, I think it's great and I look forward to hunting down every last bit.EDIT:So after 40+ hours I've nearly 100% the game. I've collected every last shard, I've beaten every single level, and completed nearly every challenge. There is one "Take no damage" challenge I have left to conquer in a level called Cramped that has three waves of enemies. Eventually, I will get lucky and do it ^_^.Just a note, others have done all that in far less time. So, completion time will depend on your skill.Besides that, I've gotten into the leaderboards a bit and even took a couple #1 spots (that were very quickly taken from me ^_^).Luckily, there are 4 save slots, so I will probably have a go at speedrunning through the entire game, or just playing it through again for fun. This just doesn't feel like a game I'm going to put down after it's "done".. I'm always on the lookout for challenging and fast paced platformers, so when I saw the trailer for Rifter about a month ago I instantly fell in love. It looked like everything I want from a game, and more. Now that I've played it, I can tell you... It's even better than I thought. It starts off quite easy for the first few levels, but the difficulty ramps up quick to place that is appropriate for a game of this type - it is a difficult game, but as any good difficult game it is never unfair. You get better quickly, and breezing through parts of a level that you just a few minutes ago were completely stuck on is amazingly satisfactory. The level design is excellent. It could easily have become a bit tideous to just be running one direction all the time, but the game mixes it up with fights that take place in enclosed spaces, in a more arena-like setting where you get a chance to learn the layout of the map, rather than just blazing past it.I'm not going to comment much on the graphics and the audio, you can see for yourself that they are amazing. However, I think that some more variation in these areas would not harm the game. I think that adding a few extra songs would go a long way, though as I'm writing this I'm not done with the game, so maybe some more songs will unlock as I progress? I love Super Meat Boy, and ever since I played it I've been on the lookout for something that scratches the same itch. This game is not only better than Super Meat Boy, it is the best 2D platformer that I've ever played. It's just that good.. Very well made, fast paced and keeps you playing for awhile. I don't have a whole ton of time on it but its an amazing game altogether.. I just bought it, played the first planet and it's awesome. Love the 80s soundtrack. The game gives you the feeling that you are doing something awesome. It makes fun and gives you anger, but good anger that let's you enjoy your success even more. Feelings I remember from playing Super Meat Boy.. This game is the literal t i t s.Prepare a couple of keyboards or controllers, in case you break yours. Recommended to me by one of my Twitch Viewers. I'm so glad they convinced me. It has an incredible movement system and a simple and strong aesthetic. The soundtrack is a perfect match to the visuals of the game as well. I've ran into a few parts that were difficult to pass, but the satisfaction of smoothly beating the level makes it worth it. Please give it a try.. I'm always on the lookout for challenging and fast paced platformers, so when I saw the trailer for Rifter about a month ago I instantly fell in love. This game is not only better than Super Meat Boy, it is the best 2D platformer that I've ever played. It's just that good.. Does what it says on the tin. Rifter is certainly interesting. This is a rather unique and really solid precision platformer with tight controls and satisfying gameplay. You'll swing and dash your way through enemies and levels while jamming to a solid set of tracks. It is tough, but in a way that is uber satisfying when you get that smooth run down. Combat is extremely satisfying and can be made as fancy or simple as you choose. I would be remiss if I did not mention the characters. Tiny, your companion, and Zip, the challenge giver, are awesome. They really bring the smiles amidst some of your frustration. This is a speedrunning platformer, so story\/characters may not be that important, but to me, those two really give a lot of personality to this title. If the trailers look interesting to you, I'd recommend giving it a try for yourself. What videos cannot portray is the actual *feeling* of swinging through the levels and arena combat areas, and how good it feels to get a smooth pass on a level you've been having trouble with. Highly recommend.. This game combines great visuals, fast-paced and easy to learn but hard to master gameplay and a good synthwave soundtrack into one awesome experience, highly recommended!
